Experiential Emotion Focused Therapies Work to Undo Your Aloneness, While Supporting You To:

About Me
My name is Adam Thompson,
I have a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) and have completed advanced post graduate training and clinical supervision in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy. AEDP is an experiential, emotion, relational and somatically focused model of therapy with direct empirical support for its effectiveness as a psychotherapy model. I am currently a level III AEDP Therapist.
My practice is located in Kingston Ontario, providing psychotherapy services in person as well as virtually across Ontario. Beginning in 2018, before starting a private practice, I worked for a community health centre supporting patients of family physicians referred for therapeutic counselling. In this role I received direct training, supervision and mentorship from experienced clinicians, supporting my own professional development and experiential expertise.

In session, I seek to show up with genuine warmth, acceptance, and in an authentically engaged and empathetic way. I strive to lead from a place of openheartedness, reaching for the parts of the self that need nourishment, believing that what is good and right and true remains intact, no matter the hardships.

Our work together will aim to reconnect you to your strengths, resilience and the inner integrative knowing that drives adaptive action and change for the better.
I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service workers (OCSWSSW), and adhere to the College’s professional standards of practice and code of ethics. I maintain practice insurance through OASW. I am engaged in continued education, training and clinical AEDP supervision. If you are eligible for reimbursement through private or workplace insurance, Psychotherapy services offered by registered Social Workers with a Masters of Social Work (MSW), are routinely, covered by employer health insurance programs.

Therapeutic Approach: Relational - Experiential - Emotion and Somatically Focused.
A relational, experiential and emotion focused approach to therapy involves a process of turning towards our selfs and our experience of emotions with compassionate attention. While insight and solutions remain a central therapeutic aim, the process in which we explore and arrive at new understanding involves an inward focus on the felt experience of emotions in the here and now. In doing so, we experientially re-discover that our emotions, both positive and painful, brings us into experiential connection with our core, self at best, which provides the energy and information that drives adaptive action in the face of challenge. The approach is a non-pathologizing integrative model for trauma processing that prioritizes and privileges markers of your core self, your resilience, individual strengths, moments of positive change, as well as positive self, emotional and relational experiences. The collaborative practice is one of mindfully attending to our bodily rooted experience of emotions with acceptance, curiosity and compassion. With care and attention we can learn to take in and provide nourishment, breathing more life into ourselves and our relationships, that results in transformational growth and human flourishing.
"Like the natural elements of wind, water and lightening, our emotions have force and direction."

Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)
AEDP is an integrative model of healing, drawing from attachment theory, affective neuroscience, somatic practices, interpersonal neurobiology, mindfulness and short-term psychodynamic psychotherapies. Its focus is on mobilizing our innate self righting capacity for healing and change.  AEDP is fundamentally a change based healing oriented approach that involves the undoing of aloneness in the face of overwhelming emotional experiences, though a moment to moment relational and experiential processing of emotions in the context of an authentic therapeutic relationship. AEDP is an evidence-supported practice with direct empirical support for its effectiveness as a psychotherapy model. (Iwakabe et al., 2020) To learn more about AEDP, please visit their website at https://www.aedpinstitute.org.

"Our emotions, both positive and the painful, are powerfully energetic resources for healing, growth, and change."
